Despite the fact that modern cars are no longer as susceptible to rust as they used to be, the danger is still around the corner. So, it’s important to take action and, if possible, prevent rust on your car and keep it looking in good condition.
To prevent rust on your car, first, carefully examine all the metal parts of the bodywork that could be most at risk. Generally speaking, the most at-risk parts are those that are most likely to be hit by flying dirt, stones and various other materials whilst driving. This means all parts near the wheels, the front of the car and the lower rear part.
For areas which are currently rust free, you can spray them with WD-40 Multi Use product. It will protect the metal from rust and corrosion. For best results, make sure you wash and clean the car well before applying WD-40 Multi Use Product and rub off any excess with a soft cloth.
To prevent rust on your car, don’t only spray WD-40 on the exterior body of the vehicle, but also spray it on the underside of the car which is more prone to getting rusty. With a coat of WD-40, your car will have the best protection against rust and corrosion.
If rust has already affected the metal, more action is needed. Use paper masking tape to isolate the area. Then, take a medium-fine grain sandpaper (120-240 grain) and work on the area concerned, removing all the rust and loose paint.
Next, using a flexible steel spatula, apply body filler to the areas you have sanded down. When the filler is perfectly hardened, rub with sandpaper to smooth it off. Finally, after cleaning the part well to remove any grit or dust, apply two coats of primer.
If the area affected by car rust is small, the car can be repainted using spray paint the same colour as the car (if the area is larger, it is advisable to take the car to a body shop). Allow the first coat to dry, before applying any subsequent coats. When finished, remove any masking tape.
Once the paint is perfectly dry, give the whole car a good polish, using a specialist car polish or wax.
