How to maintain and protect your outdoor swing

Safety Check
If you’ve had your swing for a while, or you have recently moved into a new home that already has a swing, it’s important to thoroughly check all components. First, ensure that all chains or ropes are securely attached to the frame. Next, tighten any nuts, bolts and screws, as they can wear loose with use. Finally, check ropes for any signs of fraying and check chains for damaged links. Replace anything that looks remotely suspect. You want to swing in safety!
Step 2
Give it a good clean
Whether your swing is made from wood, metal or just rope, it needs a good clean to keep it in top condition.
First, clean any soft furnishings, such as cushions or canopies. These are usually made of an ‘outdoor’ fabric which is coated with a waterproofing agent. Simply wipe them down with some soapy water. Most wooden swing sets are pre-treated with a weather resistant coating. Just spray off any dirt and grime with a hosepipe and then, let it dry.
Metal swing sets can be a bit more problematic, as metal doesn’t like water too much! For these, we recommend rubbing on some soapy water on a cloth, and then drying thoroughly.

Stop annoying squeaks
Annoying squeaks can spoil a lazy afternoon lounging outdoors. To maintain and protect your outdoor swing properly, you need to know how to get rid of squeaks. Simply spray WD-40 Multi-Use Product into the squeaking hinge or bracket. Use the smart straw function to get into the small nooks and crannies of the hinge.
Step 4
Remove and prevent rust
If any of the metal parts of your swing have started to rust, then WD-40 can help with this too. Start by brushing off excess rust with a wire brush. Next, spray some WD-40 onto a cloth and rub over the affected patch.
To prevent rust forming in the future, spray any metal parts of the swing with WD-40. Let it dry and this will create a protective coating. This will prevent any rust from forming and allow you years more swinging pleasure!

No matter what material your swing is made from, it will benefit from some WD-40 to keep it working properly and looking good for years to come.
