The washing machine is often one of the most used appliances in the house. It requires regular maintenance in order to extend its lifespan. Bad smells, dirty or damaged window joints, dirty detergent trays or squeaky doors are all common problems. We give you tips on how to maintain your washing machine, to help it look like new!
The first step, when you want to maintain a washing machine, is to eliminate bad odours. These can develop over time, and can even make the clothes smell bad. Regular cleaning of the window seal and detergent tray is key. From time to time, you can also do a high temperature wash with the addition of white vinegar or specific washing-machine cleaner products to eliminate bacteria.
Finally, be sure to leave the window open when the washing machine is not working and most importantly, remove the washed clothes from the drum as soon as the wash cycle is over.
Moisture and mould can accumulate on the window seal. Once you have identified the blackened area to be cleaned, first, pour out a glass of white vinegar with a few drops of essential oils in it if you wish (tea tree for example). Then, use this natural detergent to clean the area with a sponge. Finally, wipe with a dry cloth to remove the excess. If you realise that the seal is very badly worn, you may decide to replace it.
To maintain a washing machine in optimal condition, sometimes you need to replace the window seal. To do this, first remove the window of the washing machine with a screwdriver. Then remove the spring or clamping collar (depending on your washing machine) that holds in in place. If it’s a spring, you can detach it with a flathead screwdriver. For a clamp, all you have to do is loosen it to remove it. Then gently remove the used seal. You can now install the new seal. To do this, first lubricate the area using WD-40 Specialist Silicone Lubricant. Then install the new seal.
The detergent tray also tends to get dirty over time. Take the detergent tray out of the washing machine. Then soak it for thirty minutes in hot water mixed with 2 tablespoons of bicarbonate. Next, remove dirt from the grooves and hard-to-reach areas of the tray by scrubbing with a tootbrush. Finally, rinse well under running water, before putting it back in the washing machine.
Finally, if you find the door is squeaking, simply lubricate the hinge with WD-40 Multi-Use Product. This will ensure the door opens and closes easily.
With a little time, it becomes easy to maintain a washing machine.
By taking care of your washing machine regularly, you will extend its lifespan and avoid damaging your laundry.
