How to maintain a scooter
Long used by children and adolescents as part of their leisure time, scooters have experienced a significant rise in popularity in recent years. It is the perfect vehicle for people who need to cover short distances faster, without the hassle of a bicycle. And, it’s no secret that a well-maintained item works better and lasts longer.
Your scooter is made of four major moving mechanisms: the folding block, the height of the handlebars, the braking system and of course, the wheels. These four mechanisms require regular attention. Follow our tips on how to maintain a scooter and you’ll be zipping around in style!
Things you will need
WD-40® White Lithium Grease
Microfibre Cloth
Wrench and allen keys to tighten nuts and screws
WD-40® Multi Use Product
Step 1
Lubricate the folding block
To open and close your scooter, at the bottom of the handlebars, you have a latch. This mechanism tends to work less well as the scooter ages and becomes worn. In order to maintain a scooter properly, all you need to do is use WD-40 Multi Use Product. Use the applicator rod to spray product at the base of this latch and into the push button. Then activate the mechanism several times in a row so that the product penetrates effectively throughout the mechanism.
Step 2
Adjust the height of the scooter
The second important element, to maintain a scooter, is the height adjustment. To adjust the height of your scooter, there is a locking latch on the bar of your scooter. In the same way as before, you just need to spray a little WD-40 Multi Use Product on the mechanism, then open and close it several times. After this operation, the latch should be more manageable and easier to open and close.
Step 3
Lubricate the brake mechanism
Do not forget the brake mechanism in the scooter maintenance steps! For a metal scooter brake, you can spray a little product to lubricate the mechanism. This will stop it rusting and corroding over time.
Step 4
Maintain the bearings
You may also choose to maintain the bearings of your scooter. To do this, you have to dismantle the wheels of your scooter to reach them. This time, we strongly advise against using the WD-40 Multi Use Product. Instead, we recommend that you use a grease suitable for your bearings. For example, there are white greases such as WD-40 Specialist White Lithium Grease. The best application is to remove the bearing. To do this, follow the steps in the following video. Once clean, grease them with white lithium grease.
Step 5
Tighten the screws and nuts
Finally, to maintain your scooter, don’t forget to tighten all the nuts and screws! This will stabilize the scooter, extend its life and above all ensure your safety. The video shows you all the important points to be tightened. For this step you will need a wrench and allen keys which are the correct size for your scooter.
