How to lubricate a garage door

It’s important to take good care of your garage door.  A build-up of rust, gunk, and grime can make the door stick and affect its smooth functioning.  If you realize that the garage door is getting stuck while opening and making squeaking sounds while being operated, then you need to take action.  Read on to discover how to lubricate a garage door and keep it in optimal condition.

Things you will need

  • WD-40® Multi Use Product Smart Straw

  • Bucket of soapy water

Step 1

Wash and clean the door

It is never advisable to lubricate a garage door that is dirty and grimy.  So, grab a bucket of warm soapy water and give it a good wash, to get rid of all unwanted dirt and grime. In many cases, the dirt adds to the malfunctioning of garage doors. Cleaning the door, makes lubrication easier.

After cleaning, let it dry for a few minutes.

Step 2

Grab a can of WD-40

Once you have a clean and dry garage door, grab a can of WD-40 Multi Use Product. You can get the can at a hardware store or any supermarket near you.

Shake the can well and spray the liquid on the parts that require lubrication. When it comes to lubricating a garage door, there are three areas where you need to focus:  springs, hinges, and rollers.  These parts are all subject to a lot of wear and tear while the garage door is being used.

Good as new

Once you have lubricated your garage door, wait for a few minutes before you move the door to check its effect. After a few minutes, slowly open and close the garage door to see how well the lubrication has worked. If some parts remain stubborn, you can lubricate them again using the WD-40 Multi Use Product.
