Over time, zippers on jackets, bags or shoes can seize up and get stuck. Luckily, there’s a simple solution that’s probably sitting in your cupboard right now. Rather than getting rid of your clothes or accessories because of zipper problems, read these handy tips on how to fix a stuck zipper.
To fix a stuck zipper, first, find a bar of soap that won’t leave a colour residue. Then, slide it over and under the zipper, on either side. Try sliding the zipper up and down and repeat until it’s fixed.
This solution doesn’t deal with the root cause of rust and dirt build-up, but it does temporarily lubricate zippers effectively.
We are not joking! Lip balm or petroleum jelly can help to fix a stuck zipper. Put a small amount of petroleum jelly or lip balm on your finger or onto a brush. Apply it over and under the zipper carefully, without letting it get onto the fabric. Try and slide the zipper up and down.
Wash your hands with warm soapy water to get the petroleum jelly off completely when you have finished.
Protect the the garment or accessory with a cloth or paper towel. Hold the zipper at a short distance from the WD-40 Multi Use Product Smart Straw can and spray carefully. Wait for a few seconds, then move the zipper up and down to disperse the product. Try again if required.
If the zipper is on a tent, camping or fishing bag, or any other item that is frequently exposed to the elements, your problem could actually be that there is a little rust on the zipper. No problem, WD-40 will deal with that too, and, because WD-40 is a water displacer, it will help to keep your metal zipper protected against rust.
